Our beautiful village was founded in 1924, by refugees from Eastern Trace following the ASIA MINOR DISASTER.

Originally, a swamp existed on the site of the village. A monastery named Karamani was located nearby. With the help of the monks, the displaced 'Plagiani' built their homes, gradually converted the swampland to fertile fields and embarked on rebuilding their lives.

In commemoration of the original village, PLAGIA, our new hometown was named NEA PLAGIA. At the heart of the village, you will find the iconic church dedicated to St. George, the Patron Saint of Nea Plagia, whose icon made the journey from the lost homeland with the villagers almost 90 years ago.

Approx 4 kms away, among the ruins of the old monastery, the little church of Zoodochos Pigi (life-giving source), dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is located. Throughout the year, the Parish Priest and the congregation return to conduct Holy Liturgy there- remembering their faith, roots and ancestors.

Today, approx 1,200 villagers call Nea Plagia their home. This number rises close to 10,000 in the summer months when sandy beach seeking vacationers flock from nearby Thessaloniki, northern Greece and abroad.

We hope you'll visit our village soon and share in what we have to offer: from the beckoning ocean and beach to our ritualistic "volta" each evening along our magnificent beach-side "pesodromo" lined with tantalizing restaurants, great shopping and alluring lounges and bars.

DEDICATION
This site is dedicated to the founders of our village and their descendents.
It is also dedicated to the memory of my father, George Kourtis, who taught me the value of work ethic, generosity and compassion.
